Featured Tropes: Romance
Book Strengths:
This was a very intricate story, showcasing just another example of K Aten’s talent to cross genres, try writing new things, and keeping a variety in her storytelling. An adventure with a dystopian, yet futuristic, sci-fi feel was refreshing and built new exciting worlds to explore, mysteries to uncover, and characters to discover and love.
The clever mystery that surrounds Olivienne and Castellan’s adventure was exciting, kept me gripped, and left me wanting to know more. Discovering the secrets they sought was an experience very much for the characters, but also the reader. I was drawn into the story, the power, and the adventure. It really kept me on my toes.
Book weaknesses:
Although complicated in the language, names, and places of this newly created world, it was really easy to read, and really fitted with the world built. It did take some getting used to, but the language was clever and fitted well with the premise of the story, making it unique and giving it a rustic, colloquial, old world feel.
Character Chemistry:
Olivienne and Castellan have a tension, both sexual and power based. They are both strong, independent, confident women and despite clashing a little, their attraction is undeniable, and sizzling just below the surface in a slow burn as they come to terms with their lustful feelings.
Once connected emotionally, their love and dedication to one another is jumping off the page and creating an exciting relationship to accompany the adventure they are already on.
Castellan was strong, powerful, and a wonder of a character. I liked Olivienne, but the emotional connection I got to the conflict Castellan is dealing with in this story really made her my favourite character.
Heat Rating: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
A promising start to what looks to be a very exciting series, looking forward to more.
