Femme Tales by Anne Shade

Fairy Tales have never been this much fun!

What was the book about?
This is a thoroughly enjoyable trilogy, with each short story loosely based upon a particular fairy tale. Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty and lastly Cinderella. All the main characters are African American women who interconnect over the three stories.

Ebony “the Beast” Trent is a successful hip-hop artist and has learnt to keep her heart safe by keeping everyone at a distance except her sister and Mama Ellis, the woman who looked after both Ebony and her sister when young. When Mama Ellis has a stroke, Ebony ensures she has everything necessary to recover including a live-in nurse. Belinda Jansen does her father a favour when she agrees to be Mama Ellis’ nurse and she cannot help be drawn to the cool, seemingly emotionally distant Ebony.

Chayse Charmichael is the chef and owner of a restaurant. Chayse is captivated by Serena Frazier who has become a regular but Chayse can barely put words together to have a conversation with her. A horrible incident involving Serena brings Chayse to her side. Even when she is asleep she can still hear words of love….but will they be enough to heal her?

Cass Phillips is the owner of Pure Music Records and producer of Ebony Trent’s music. She is a workaholic and her colleagues conspire to make sure she has a holiday to de-stress. Faith Shaw, a shoe designer, is still grieving over her mother’s recent death and also having to deal with her stepsisters and stepfather. Faith travels to Turks & Caicos and meets Cass on the beach. They are immediately drawn to each other, but unknown connections will try and pull them apart.

Featured Tropes:
Butch/Femme, fairy tales

Book Strengths:
Who doesn’t love the swagger of a butch or the strength and sass of a femme?
All of these characters have depth and are not cardboard cut outs at all.  The sense of family is strong through each story and it is probably one of the things I enjoyed most. Femme Tales is for every little girl who has grown up wishing for a happy ever after with the Princess not the Prince.

Character Chemistry:
The connections between each MC couple were hot! The interesting thing I found was while each story was its own, there was a thread that connected them all together by a strong friendship. The strength of the women is great to see as well.

Wrap up
I really enjoyed reading this set of stories. Personally, the third story resonated the most for me, whether it was the scene on the beach, the determination to make something special work despite setback or just the connection of the two main characters I don’t know but I still think about it.
